A knock on the door comes just as Ryah is standing to fix her dress.

“Who is it?” I ask as I pull my pants up.

“Franki.”

“Come on in,” I say, knowing the door is locked.

“It’s locked,” she says as she tries to turn the knob. A panic seizes me. I look up at Ryah. She’s smiling.

I stand just as Ryah removes her shoes and walks to the corner of the room without making a sound. I turn the lamp off and navigate my way to the door in the darkness. I take one more look at the corner of the room where Ryah stands before I unlock the door and open it. Before Franki can push her way inside, I block the entrance with my body and say, “I’m ready to leave.”

“Were you sitting in the dark?”

“Yes. I needed a quiet place to think.”

Franki doesn’t question me as I exit the office and shut the door behind me. She reaches for my hand and holds it. She stops. For a second I fear what she may say. I smell like sex. Can she smell it? “Everything is going to be OK, Eli. I promise you. Everything will be OK.”
